The Networking and Wide-Area Systems Group investigates software solutions for distributed systems, wireline and wireless networking, operating systems, security and privacy, technologies and applications for the developing world.
Many of our projects embody a strong inter-disciplinary collaborative spirit. We are proud to work very closely with the TIER group at UC Berkeley, the PDOS group at MIT and the CATER group at NYU, which is a collaboration between the NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, NYU school of Medicine, NYU Wagner school of Public Policy and the NYU department of Economics.
The NeWS Group is part of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, NYU.
Research Projects
ICTD Mobile Services
- ATMosphere. Uses ubiquitous GSM-based SMS messaging to provide automatic teller machine micro-deposit services in rural contexts.
- RuralCafe . A system that supports efficient web-search over intermittent and very low bandwidth networks.
- SmartTrack. A highly reliable, widely available, secure and ultra low-cost smartphone based distributed drug information system that can be used for tracking the flow and consumption of ARV drugs in HAART programs.
- Efficient Lightweight Mobile Records (ELMER) is a system that provides a practical and lightweight database access protocol for accessing and updating medical records remotely from mobile devices, such that it can be used by health workers, patients and doctors alike in rural contexts.
Wireless
- ROMA. A practical and distributed dual-radio mesh protocol that solves the problems of routing and channel assignment.
- WiRE. Wireless Rural Extensions is the next generation of long-distance wireless networks.
Social Network Systems
- Kaleidoscope Kaleidoscope is a peer-to-peer system of relays that help users circumvent Internet censorship. Kaleidoscope advertises relay information over the social network in a way that prevents the censor from learning and blocking relays .
- SumUp SumUp is a Sybil-resilient online voting system that can help content voting sites (e.g. Digg, YouTube) prevent an attacker from casting many votes using fake identities.
- FriendStore. It is a cooperative backup and file sharing system that uses a social network to improve reliability and availability.
Wide-area Storage Infrastructure
- WheelFS. WheelFS is a wide-area distributed file system that helps developers build fault-tolerance multi-site applications easily. WheelFS is flexible in that it allows applications to adjust the tradeoff between consistency, failure handling, file and replica placement.
